In thinking about my favorite or most influential class here at Marian I feel like I have two or three that I might consider for the top of the list. Even Philosophy comes to mind, because even though its challenging, well maybe beyond challenging at times, I find it interesting because it teaches me to look at things in ways that I had never thought of before. That being said I am not choosing Philosophy. I am also not choosing my Introduction to Marketing class, even though, it definitely would be my second choice.
My easy first choice is Careers in Business, that I took last fall with Brandy Bast. This class is truly one that no matter what I do I will be able to draw on it for my whole life. One example is the mock interviews we had to do. Even though I pride myself in being fearless and outgoing, answering questions in the STAR format was completely new to me. My dad who has spent a lifetime in sales told me that learning and being comfortable with that type of interview is something that takes a lot of practice but can pay great dividends when perfected. We also got to do some hands-on mingling with different employers from different fields. This not only helped me to learn about potential entry level positions, it also helped me to learn how to interact in a way that will help me when I pursue an internship and eventually employment.
Another key component of the class was developing resumes, and cover letters, as well as thank you letters for interviews. All of these will translate directly to the real world of job searching for me very soon. One thing I learned is that I need a better resume. This class was eye opening in that, even though I have had some jobs in the past, they don't necessarily give me the background that employers might be looking for. I am hoping to start addressing this with my job this coming summer. We also had to develop a LinkedIn profile. I found it amazing how quickly people started connecting with me. Some of these connections are people I don't know but many work in fields that might interest me in the future. Overall, this class really stood out to me that Marian takes a very serious interest in future employment of its graduates. This class made me see why the placement rate out of the Business School is nearly 100 percent. I also want to give a shout-out to my instructor, Brandy. Never once did she not seem to have her heart 100 percent into her students. You could truly tell she cared! She is definitely an asset to this University.
As a side note the next time, I see my dad prepping for an interview with his STAR questions spread out all over our living room floor, maybe I can jump in and offer suggestions!
